What is Personal Pronoun? Personal Pronouns List and Example Sentences

Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns are short words that replace a person’s proper name. When a personal pronoun is used in English, it gives us information about the person it replaces and the gender, number, and status of the people. Personal pronouns can be listed as “I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them”.

Personal pronouns are like doubles in grammar. They are there to represent the people or animals that play the leading roles in our sentences. Thanks to them, we speak more simply, and we do not repeat cumbersome proper names.

Personal pronouns

The first person pronoun is used to refer to the person speaking, the second person pronoun to refer to the person being spoken to, and the third person pronoun to refer to someone else. Each of the three grammatical persons mentioned also has a plural form.

Personal pronouns are the words that take part in the subject role in the sentence. They are also known as “personal pronouns”. They come before the verb in the sentence by using them instead of the noun. If there is a personal pronoun in the sentence, the proper noun is not used. So using both at the same time is wrong.

Rick he is swimming.

The sentence given above is incorrect. To be accurate, either just the “Rick” or just the “he” personal pronoun should be used.

He disappeared inside the mall.

If you want to be a successful student, you must attend school regularly.

He has been playing basketball since childhood.

I have a new generation gaming computer.

Object Pronouns

Object pronouns are words that act as objects in a sentence. Unlike personal pronouns, they come after the verb in the sentence.

Can you give me that old red bag?

This blue ballpoint pen belongs to me.

He wants to negotiate terms with us.

He takes her to the cinema in the center of the city.

Look at them, how well they sing.

In the use of “it”, if something is not clear, its name is mentioned first. After using the name once, “it” can be used afterward.

I can’t find my new textbook. Where did you put it?

As in the example given above, we specified the object in the first sentence. In the second sentence that followed, it was enough to use the pronoun “it” instead of using the name of the object again.

Personal Pronouns and Word Saving

Let’s take an example to understand how personal pronouns simplify our sentences.

“Nicola Tesla was born in the Austrian Empire in 1856, and Nikola Tesla received advanced training in physics and engineering in the 1870s. The reputation of Nicola Tesla has reached the present day with his work in the field of alternating current and his numerous inventions. Nicola Tesla died in a hotel room in New York in January 1943.

As can be understood from the example given, using personal pronouns allows us to save the number of words in any paragraph or sentence writing. While the subject was emphasized in every sentence in the first paragraph, it was emphasized only in the first sentence in the second paragraph, and in the following sentences, personal pronouns were used instead of the subject.
